Milestones: Big Server Upgrade
Posted by gregor on Tuesday, January 31 @ 12:12:47 EST (2617 reads)
Topic The progress of the project
I've been waiting until everything was working to make this announcement. We have about two weeks straight uptime on the new studio and servers now.

Years in the planning, this upgrade will do two things. Decrease outages and offer new stream types.

There is a link to the new mp3 stream for iTunes listeners on the main http://hober.com homepage.

Notes: Listening Retreat

We've been able to hold a retreat in order to listen to the hundreds of CDs in the in-box waiting for airplay. It takes a good bit of work to find the proper gems in the crowd that are must-have songs for Hober. Probably about an hour per song. We've added about 250 tunes, - about 15 hours of music - to the playlist.

Here are the albums we've drawn from:

Notes: Interview with gregor

Topic The progress of the project
I gave a little interview regarding the state of internet radio. Nothing earthshaking, but contains some of the things I've learned in six years of continuous webcasting. Thanks to Steve Digman http://www.digmansworld.com

Milestones: An eProtest download: FREE Realplayer from the Marketers!
Posted by gregor on Monday, February 02 @ 10:27:27 EST (4601 reads)
Topic The progress of the project
A link is circulating around the web for a Realplayer download that is free of the normal gauntlet of marketing info.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/audiohelp.shtml?help
Thanks to the Beeb! While we have followed channels, paid our fees and tried to direct our users to do the "responsible" thing, we are joining this backlash protest.

How many times have I heard that earnest Hober listeners have had to shell out $19.99 for the so-called "free" Realplayer simply because they were intentionally confused and mislead by Real Networks download page.

Yes, there is a "free" player on the Real download page, but it is hard to find, and then makes you give up more personal information than you feel comfortable with and tries to subscribe you to a litany of marketing spam and hides "opt out" choices.

I hope the folks at Real Networks take this to heart and do some introspection. If the money is more important to them than their client's experience, then we will have to switch to another player.

Letters: Friends of Hober mailing
Posted by gregor on Wednesday, December 24 @ 00:33:17 EST (2755 reads)
Topic The progress of the project
Hello Hober people! This is a rare mailing on the "Friends of Hober" list.

I simply want to remind you about the Hober Thinking Radio broadcast - it sure is sounding good nowadays. http://hober.com

Can you believe we've passed through five years of streaming continuous glorious unvarnished folk music? The website was re-launched this Autumn, and is growing each week. More people than ever are partaking of the unique mix of unvarnished music that we offer freely to all comers. Thanks go to the many hundreds people who have helped to keep the encoders up-and-running all the time - no small feat. We've been through lots of little outages, pesky negotiations with the music industry, and bandwidth bills that seem to come like the shuffling of a deck of cards. But we've also managed to host over 50 live concert broadcasts, made 13 "Private Reserve" albums, and have added thousands of new titles to the playlist.

And Thank You for telling your friends about the streams - many listeners still have not yet heard about the best station on the internet! If its been a while since you've visited, we hope you take time to come on back in to the warmth.

As Hober Friend Thomas Creed said this week, "Your music selections sustain me in a way that is indescribable. We are living under tough times but you guys make it bearable."

We are making history, my friends. Together we are in the process of logging the largest and longest broadcast of folk music in history, exposing hundreds of thousands to music that they love, but had been unaware of.

Sincerely, gregor and the crew

PS: Since you have made it to the bottom of the letter, let me ask you to consider gifting the project this winter.

    http://hober.com/gift.html

We are now raising funds for the 2004 season. This is one place where your money will be used for a wholly good and noble endeavor. My aim is to play this wonderful music to children not even born yet. And to project a beam of heart and soul to the rest of the world that stands for the America that me and my type believe in.

Milestones: New hober.com web site in beta testing.

You are using the new hober.com web site. We are now publishing using a Content Management System (CMS) which should allow for an expansion of high-quality content with little more overhead time. In the past the site was entirely hand-coded, which is great fun, but very time consuming.

Have fun clicking around. Let me know how you like it. Send a picture!
